If you spend any time on this website you will see that I am primarily drawn to the landscape. It is what I really enjoy and what really drives my photography. But it is also good to experiment a bit and enjoy other aspects and subjects of photography. This is where I share the best of those explorations. Enjoy!

WHY I PHOTOGRAPH THE LANDSCAPE

I have had a passion for the outdoors my entire life.  I feel different when I am outside… surrounded by trees, water, and rocks… or standing alone in a high mountain meadow… or enjoying the solitude of the desert.  The act of photographing… looking closely and "seeing"… deepens my experience and my interaction with the landscape.  Taking a camera into the landscape allows me to experience it more fully, which in turn, allows me to create better images.  The experience and the images are forever linked.

I share my images with friends and family to perhaps influence them to spend more time in the landscape and to slow down, explore, and look closely.  It is critical that we preserve as much of our wild spaces as we can - whether in national parks or nearby places.

As Edward Abbey said… “Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. A civilization which destroys what little remains of the wild, the spare, the original, is cutting itself off from its origins and betraying the principle of civilization itself.”

FEATURED IMAGE

I have always been fascinated by water and the reflections of color and light on its surface. The variations are endless and no two images are alike - even when made within seconds or minutes of each other in the same place.  The constant flow of the water changes the lines, shapes, and colors present on the surface.  The softly blowing wind distorts reflections like an abstract painter. And it doesn't just have to be the yellows and oranges of autumn - the deep greens of summer reflected with patches of blue sky are just as mesmerizing.

The soft, subtle colors in the water immediately drew me to this scene. I stood still for what seemed like hours, quiet, and observing. And while the colors of the water are irresistible, it’s also as much about the solitary rock that seems to echo the colors in the water. And I love the barely visible leaves under the surface. One of my favorites for sure!

RECENT BLOG POSTS

My Blog is something I started in order to change the way in which I do photography. I used to focus on the big trips, places like the national parks and exotic locations. That meant there were large gaps between each photo expedition. I now publish a blog post every month and it has pushed me to go out and photograph more regularly - and to see the extraordinary in the ordinary!
